Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs |
Why are Esteem needs important?
Esteem needs are the need to have high regard for oneself and from all others. Research suggests that esteem and belongingness needs go hand in hand with one another because they “both involve social interaction” (Taormina & Gao, 2013). As mention, in order to satisfy our esteem needs, first, our belongingness needs must be fulfilled. Additionally, our esteem needs must be fulfilled for the attainment of self-actualization. Fulfillment in esteem needs are important for feelings of self-worth, self-capability, and admiration or respect from others (Maslow, 1973).

Other Factors of esteem Research has examined the interaction between esteem, traditional values, and anxiety/neuroticism (Taormina & Gao, 2013). Findings show that the more traditional values one holds, the more their esteem needs are satisfied. In addition, a negative correlation has been found between anxiety/neuroticism and esteem, suggesting high levels of anxiety/neuroticism potentially predicted lower levels of esteem for oneself and from others.
